Correct inflation is highly significant when considering tire life, performance and safety. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to simply look at a tire on any vehicle and detect a problem such as low inflation. However, low inflation can cause many tire related problems. Proper inflation pressure largely determines a tire's load capacity. An under-inflated tire operates at high deflection. The results demonstrate sluggish handling and cause excessive mechanical flexing as well as heat build up. This minor over-site could lead to catastrophic tire failure.
Nitrogen is a dry, inert gas which is used to inflate airplane tires and race car tires for improved performance. Ultimately, oxygen in compressed air permeates through the wall of the tire and reduces the tires inflation pressure. During it's journey through the tire wall, the oxygen oxidizes the rubber compounds which causes lower inflation and deterioration.
Dry nitrogen helps the tire to run cooler. Failure to maintain the proper level of oxidation causes under-inflation, premature tire failure, overheating, uneven wear, rim corrosion, and rubber deterioration.
